Description
3-4 Hunter Square in Edinburgh is a former Merchants' Hall designed by John Baxter between 1788 and 1790. This three-storey building, with an attic and basement, features a classical style and has been converted into commercial premises with restaurants on the ground floor since 2007. The exterior is made of sandstone ashlar, with a rusticated ground level. It has band courses and fluted detailing with rosettes at the second storey, a bracketed cornice, and a blocking course. Four giant fluted Doric pilasters rise from the first storey, and there are large round-arched window openings at the first storey, set within over-arches. The central entrance doorway is round-arched and includes a six-panel timber door, flanked by segmental-arched openings with decorative multi-pane glazing in the fanlight. The doorpiece is also Doric pilastered, and there is a blind balustraded parapet at the first storey.
The upper storeys predominantly feature multi-pane timber sash and case windows.
Inside, as seen in 2007, the building was refurbished in 1996. It includes an open-well staircase with a timber banister and iron balusters. The first floor has a large double-height room with simple cornicing and a replica carved timber fire surround, while other rooms have been modified.
