Description
83 and 85 East Claremont Street in Edinburgh are a pair of three-storey and basement tenements built between 1825 and 1827 by Thomas Bonnar. The buildings feature a six-bay façade with three bays each, constructed from sandstone ashlar with channelled rustication at the ground level and squared rubble on the east elevation. Notable architectural details include a base course, a cill band course at the first floor, and corniced and architraved windows with decorative window guard balconies at the first floor. The buildings also have a cornice and blocking course with an eaves band, along with ashlar steps and entrance platts that oversail the basement.
On the principal east elevation, there are timber panelled doors set in recessed panels with fanlights in paired entrances located in the central bays, while the remaining bays feature windows set in recesses. The fenestration is regular, with larger windows at the first floor.
The north elevation, facing East Claremont Street Lane, has a gable end wall with a single bay at the centre, small windows at the ground level, an oriel window at the first floor, and a window at the second floor. The buildings are fitted with timber sash and case windows featuring 12-pane glazing, with plate glass used for the first-floor windows on the east elevation. The roofs have ridge and gablehead stacks topped with terracotta cans, and the property is enclosed by fleur-de-lys headed cast-iron railings. The interior was not seen in 1998.
