3 Joppa Road, Joppa, Edinburgh

1 Joppa Road in Joppa, Edinburgh, is a pair of terraced houses built in the later 19th century, with some later alterations. The buildings are two stories high and have six bays, featuring a rectangular plan and flanking single-storey pavilions. The exterior is constructed of droved ashlar with polished ashlar dressings, although there are render repairs to No 1. The rear and side elevations are made of rubble. Architectural details include a base course, a cill course at the first floor, a cornice, and a blocking course.

On the northeast elevation facing Joppa Road, the bays and windows are regularly arranged. The central bays have pilaster-colonnaded paired doorpieces, each with a deep-set panelled Edinburgh door and a two-pane rectangular fanlight above. Each pavilion has a window.

The southwest elevation, which is the rear, features a dry-dashed single-storey addition to the outer right of No 3 and a glazed sun-room in the center.

Both houses have 12-pane timber sash and case windows in the pavilion of No 1 and throughout No 3, while No 1 also has plate glass timber sash and case windows. The roofs are covered with grey slate, featuring piended roofs with rendered and coped wallhead stacks on the side elevations, and platform roofs on each pavilion.

Inside, both houses retain working shutters, plasterwork cornices in the principal rooms, and cast-iron balustrades on each staircase. However, there are no original chimneypieces remaining.

The boundary walls are constructed of rubble.
