9 Joppa Road, Edinburgh

11 Joppa Road is an earlier 19th-century, single-storey house with a raised basement, forming part of a five-bay terraced pair of classical houses. The building has a rectangular plan with later additions to the centre bay at the rear. The exterior features droved ashlar with polished dressings, which are now painted, and rendered at the ground level of the northwest elevation. The upper part of the northwest elevation is constructed of rubble, while there is a harled addition to the northeast rear at the first floor. The southeast elevation has a rendered ground floor and bull-faced render at the first floor. A band course runs between the storeys, topped by a cornice and blocking course.

On the northeast elevation facing Joppa Road, the outer bays are slightly advanced, with a window in each bay and each storey, while the centre bay is blinded. The entrances are located on the side elevations. The southwest rear elevation features additions to the centre that extend further to No 9.

The windows include plate glass timber sash and case windows at No 9, except for a uPVC window at the basement on the outer right. No 11 has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with 2-pane uPVC windows on the outer left. The roof is grey slate with a piended design and a rendered, coped mutual stack at the centre.

The interior of No 9 was not seen in 1994, while No 11 has no original chimneypieces in situ except for one in the principal room, which is made of white marble. The principal room at the upper storey retains original plasterwork and a panelled dado.
