Description

5 Joppa Road in Edinburgh is a mid-19th century pair of classical terraced houses that have undergone some later alterations. The buildings are two stories high and consist of five bays, with additions to the outer bays at the rear. They are constructed from droved ashlar with polished dressings, while No 7 is painted. The side elevations are squared and snecked. Architectural features include a base course, a band course between the storeys, a cornice, and a blocking course.

The northeast elevation facing Joppa Road features ashlar porches at the ground level in the center of each house, complete with a base course, cornice, and blocking course. The windows have ornamental glazing patterns and are square in shape, while the panelled doors are located on the return elevations.

The southwest rear elevation was not visible in 1994, but both houses have additions to the outer bays, which may be single-storey structures as indicated on Sutter's map.

No 5 has twelve lying-pane timber sash and case windows, while No 7 has plate glass timber sash and case windows. The roof is a grey slate piended design, featuring a rendered and coped wallhead stack on the northwest elevation.

The interior was not seen in 1994, but according to the current owner, No 7 has working shutters, intact plasterwork, and original chimneypieces.

The boundary walls are made of squared rubble and topped with ashlar coping.
