Description
Hawthorn Cottage, located at 29 Joppa Road in Edinburgh, is a single-storey, three-bay classical house that likely dates back to around 1860, with some later alterations. The exterior features finely droved ashlar with polished dressings, while the side and rear elevations are made of squared and snecked sandstone with droved dressings. The building includes a base course, cornice, and blocking course.
The northern elevation, facing Joppa Road, has four concrete steps leading up to a central deep panelled door, which is topped by a rectangular plate glass fanlight and framed by a rendered advanced doorpiece. There are windows in the flanking bays that have later louvered shutters.
At the southern elevation, there is a single-storey addition on the outer left side. The windows throughout the property are 12-pane timber sash and case style. The roof is covered with grey slate and features droved ashlar and coped stacks, with a wallhead stack to the east and a mutual stack to the west.
Inside, the cottage boasts decorative plasterwork, including a large ceiling rose in the principal room, and a white marble chimneypiece. The shutters are still in place but are not operational.
The property is also defined by its gateway and boundary walls, which are constructed of rubble with coping at the front. The pedestrian gateway features a pediment and finials on the gatepiers.
