Chapel Range, Poor Clare's Convent, 105-109 Lasswade Road, Edinburgh

Chapel Range at Poor Clare's Convent, located at 105-109 Lasswade Road in Edinburgh, was designed by A E Purdie in 1896, with additions made around 1930. The convent consists of two-storey L-plan buildings that include a chapel, along with a U-plan wing from the 1930s and single-storey ranges that create an enclosed cloister. The structure is built from squared and snecked sandstone, featuring bull-faced long and short quoins and polished dressings. The 1896 buildings have cusped windows.

The west range, which houses the chapel, has a steep-pitched roof and an adjoining accommodation wing to the south. The chapel features a birdcage bellcote on the south gable, a carved stone crucifix on the north gable, and hoodmoulded bipartite windows at the first floor. There is also a rose window on the north gable and a hoodmoulded pointed-arched window on the south gable. The accommodation wing has hoodmoulded bipartite windows on both floors.

The north range has regularly spaced single windows on both floors and a boarded door. The east range, built in 1930, is a single-storey lean-to with round-arched windows facing the inner court and bipartite windows on the rendered first floor. The east elevation has an irregular window layout with a mix of fixed lying-pane and leaded windows, as well as small-pane sash and case windows. The roofs are covered with grey and grey-purple slate, featuring heavy coping on the ridge and gablehead stacks of the 1896 buildings, terracotta ridging, gabletted skewputts on the chapel, and coped and rendered stacks on the 1930s wing, along with decorative wrought-iron finials.

Inside, the vaulted chapel has been subdivided into two spaces, each containing marble and plaster crocketted reredos, hoodmoulded doorways, boarded doors with iron fixtures, and leaded glass windows with blue stained glass borders. The corridors and rooms are plain, with a decorative radiator in the main corridor and turned timber balusters.

The property is also defined by coped gatepiers and a high coped boundary wall along the street.
