Description

This is a range of buildings dating from the later 18th century and earlier 19th century, situated on a corner site in Edinburgh. The property has undergone several alterations throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, including refitting of the public bar in the 1950s and the lounge in the 1930s.

The building fronting Kirkgate is a two-storey, much altered, harled building with five irregular bays. Stone margins define the bays. The south elevation has been altered, featuring a doorway to the left of the centre at ground floor, above which is a lintel inscribed "Reuben Butler's House." Windows to the left have been enlarged to create bipartites both at ground and first floor levels. A further doorway, with a moulded surround dating to the mid-20th century, is located to the left, alongside two windows, and one window at the right. There are three windows at the first floor, with a pair of outer windows enlarged to bipartites. Smaller windows are situated close under the eaves, fitted with modern windows featuring an eight-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with purple slates to the front, grey slates to the rear, and includes fireclay ridge tiles, along with harled end and mutual stacks topped with thackstanes. The rear elevation is largely unaltered, with only two windows at the first floor.

Adjoining to the east is a two-storey corner property dating to the mid-19th century, featuring a corner canted bay. It is constructed of squared rubble with ashlar margins, with painted base and cill courses. A door is positioned at the corner, above which is a window. The east elevation comprises three bays facing Kirkgate, and three irregular bays facing Kirkbrae, with a vehicular opening to the outer right, fitted with a metal shutter door. Renewed sash and case windows with six-pane glazing are present at the first floor. The roof is slate-covered with purple slates and has a harled end and shouldered rubble wallhead stacks with cornices. A piended, two-storey rubble stair tower is located in the re-entrant to the rear, with a timber-boarded outshoot.

The two-storey, four-bay house adjoining to the left, now subdivided, has a door to the centre at ground floor, flanked by two windows, with four windows above at the first floor. A stair window is centrally placed at the rear, and windows are present in the outer bays, with later, narrower windows inserted between. Timber sash and case windows with twelve-pane glazing patterns are fitted, some of which are double glazed. Ashlar coped skewes are present, along with purple slates and ashlar stacks with a simple cornice. A rubble end gable completes the structure.

The interior of the public house is a simple three-roomed space, primarily fitted with mid-20th century fixtures. The lobby has a two-leaf glazed timber door. The main bar area has three-quarter height timber panelling to the walls, a U-shaped counter with similar panelling, and a small island gantry extending to ceiling height. The lounge to the rear (west) of the main bar features dark timber panelling rising to ceiling height on the west wall, a curved bar with an inwards sloping front and deep overhanging canopy supported on scrolled brackets with carved foliate decoration. A small gantry with mirrors and carved decoration, a modern replacement, is also present. Stained glass is incorporated into the timber-panelled doors.
