Description

Covington is a 2-storey, 3-bay L-plan villa built around 1865. The exterior features squared and coursed stugged ashlar with polished ashlar dressings on the front, while the sides and rear are made of squared rubble with stugged ashlar margins. The villa has timber sash and case windows, with 6-pane glazing on the front and a 12-pane glazing pattern on the sides and rear. The roof is covered with grey slates and has corniced ashlar stacks, along with ashlar coped skews and skewputts.

On the north (front) elevation, there are steps leading to a central door, which is a recessed 4-panelled door topped by a 2-pane letterbox fanlight. Above the door is a consoled doorpiece, and there is a window on the first floor. Flanking the central entrance are gabled bays, each featuring a canted, flat-roofed bay that projects through both floors, with a base course and a cill course at the first floor.

The east elevation faces the garden and has a gable end on the right with a window and a later door opening at ground floor, along with a window on the first floor. There is a slightly lower service wing that contains two windows on each floor.

The south elevation has a service court at the rear, which includes a lean-to slated outhouse and a porch over the backdoor. There is also a stone-built former carriage house that adjoins the garden walls to the south.

Inside, part of the interior is visible, featuring a two-leaf, half-glazed inner hall door and a cantilevered stone stair with cast-iron balusters.

The property also includes gatepiers and garden walls, featuring two pairs of pyramidal capped ashlar gatepiers facing Kirk Brae and ashlar coped rubble garden walls.

To the northwest of the house, there is a small cast-iron octagonal greenhouse with finials and coloured glass panels, which is contemporary with the main house.
