Description

West Mains Of Ingliston is an 18th-century farmhouse that was built in two phases and has undergone modern alterations. It is a two-storey, five-bay structure with a long rectangular plan, originally consisting of three bays before being extended by two additional bays. The exterior is harled and painted, featuring painted sandstone margins and a slightly battered rubble base course.

The south (main) elevation has five bays, with a narrow door located in the second bay from the left and a broad window in the penultimate bay to the right. The remaining bays have regular windows that are symmetrically arranged at the first floor level, with lintels that abut directly against the eaves.

The north (rear) elevation is asymmetrical with seven bays and features irregularly sized, randomly disposed window openings. There is a lean-to slated entrance in the re-entrant angle between the farmhouse and a new build. The window arrangement from left to right includes a small window, two regular windows, a narrow window off-centre to the right, a still narrower window, and a large window at the outer right. The first-floor window arrangement consists of two regular windows in the left bays, a narrow window off-centre to the left, a small square window, and a blank wall at the outer right.

On the west elevation, there is a window at both the ground and first floor at the outer right. The windows are modern wooden casements, including 3, 6, and 8-pane tilt and pivot windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring raised stone skews and evidence of thackstane on the apex chimney stacks, which are rendered and coped, with a ridge stack that is off-centre to the left.
