Description

Main Block, Agra Lodge is a substantial villa, dating to circa 1860, with significant later additions and alterations. Originally a 2-storey, 3-bay villa, it was doubled in size around 1880 and a 3-stage Italianate entrance tower was added at the centre. A canted window was added to the left side around 1900, and the building is now subdivided. The main block is constructed of stugged cream ashlar with polished dressings, featuring a base course, long and short quoins, moulded eaves, and stop-chamfered arrises.

The north (Ferry Road) elevation is dominated by the central tower. The ground floor entrance features a panelled door recessed within a frame, adorned with delicately capitalled colonnettes supporting a roll-moulded upper architrave and consoled cornice. Above this are paired round-headed windows framed by columns, set within an ashlar frame with a bracketed balconette of ashlar balustrade. The third stage has a corniced tripartite window with a bracketed cill and a cornice with a serrated corbel table supporting a balustraded parapet. To the left and right of the tower are returns with single windows at each stage, detailed similarly. A later plain ashlar porch and a pair of panelled doors are set in the re-entrant angle to the right. The original 3-bay villa to the left retains a central doorway (with a blocked fanlight), and windows above and to the right, along with a closet window. A full-height, piend-roofed canted window has been added to the left, and a single-story, single-bay section is set back to the left with a blocking course. Bays to the right of the tower slightly project from the original building line, featuring windows to both floors in the inner bay, and a full-height, piend-roofed canted bipartite window in the outer bay.

The east elevation has a single-story range at ground level and a central round-shouldered wallhead stack on the first floor.

The south elevation is 2-storeys and attic, with 6 bays. The original 3 bays are positioned on the right, with a partly blocked round-headed stair window at the centre and a full-height canted bay to the left and a single window to the right on the first floor. A later projection exists at ground level. Two dormers are visible—a broad box-dormer to the left and a canted dormer to the right. The 3 later bays to the left have a central window and a first-floor window, flanked by bipartites at ground level. A wallhead stack with shaped shoulders is present in the left bay, along with further dormers. A cast-iron spiral stair and platform to the outer left leads to a later first-floor door.

The west elevation features bipartite windows on both floors at the centre, a wallhead stack with consoled shoulders, and a canted dormer behind.

The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass; some are 4-pane to the rear. The roof is grey slate, with piend and platform sections, coped stugged ashlar stacks, and some octagonal cans.

The interior includes a timber stair and decorative plaster cornices and ceilings.

Low rubble boundary walls with ashlar coping run along the front, punctuated by a pair of obelisk gatepiers and decorative wrought-iron gates. Rubble side walls have semi-circular coping.
