Description

This building at 200 Ferry Road, Edinburgh, dates from around 1860 and consists of a symmetrical pair of three-storey, three-bay classical houses set back from the street within a garden area. The exterior is made of polished cream ashlar sandstone, which is channelled at the ground level. It features a continuous base course, a cornice, and a blocking course. The openings have raised margins, with cornices above the first-floor windows and segmental-arched openings on the ground floor. The east, west, and rear elevations are constructed from squared and snecked rubble, with tooled dressings and long and short quoins.

On the south (entrance) elevation, there are timber panelled doors in the outer left and right bays, with a plate glass fanlight above the door of No 202 and a 6-pane fanlight above No 200. The ground floor has single windows in the remaining bays, while the first and second floors are regularly fenestrated.

The east and west side elevations feature round-arched stair windows, with a single window above on both sides. The curvilinear gables sweep down to the first floor at the rear.

The north (rear) elevation has various additions, including a central pitched-roof single-storey block and a further single-storey wing to No 202. The first floor is regularly fenestrated, with dormer windows in the bays on the inner left and right.

No 202 has 2-pane timber sash and case windows on the south elevation, while No 200 and both rear elevations have 8-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring stone skews, deeply corniced gablehead stacks, and a mutual stack at the centre with moulded octagonal cans.

The boundary features include cast-iron boundary piers topped with ball finials and a coped rubble boundary wall to the south and west, which encloses the site from Ferry Road and the adjoining park. There is a low boundary wall to the street, but the railings are missing.
