Description
36-38 Grange Loan is a pair of flatted villas built around 1860. The building is two stories high with an attic and has a symmetrical rectangular plan with six bays. The rear is constructed of squared and snecked sandstone rubble, while the other elevations feature lightly stugged ashlar with polished dressings. Notable architectural details include a base, cill and blocking courses, an eaves cornice, and architraved window surrounds.
On the south elevation facing Grange Loan, there are steps leading up to pilastered and corniced doorpieces located in the second and fifth bays, featuring panelled doors and plate glass fanlights. Above these doors, there are single windows on each floor in the third and fourth bays, with tripartite windows in both outer bays.
The east elevation also has steps leading up to an entrance similar to the south elevation, with a single window on the first floor.
The west elevation, facing Findhorn Place, is three bays wide and has a central doorpiece similar to the others, with a two-light fanlight above. There are probably blinded single windows on the outer right and left at the ground floor, obscured by vegetation. The first floor features a smaller single window flanked by windows, with the outer right window blinded.
The building predominantly has plate glass sash and case windows, with some small pane windows at No 40. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design, featuring two canted dormers and twelve single flat-roofed dormers on the south side. The wallhead is shouldered and corniced, with mutual stacks and moulded octagonal cans.
The interiors were not seen in 1990. There is a low coped boundary wall along Grange Loan, with some remaining cast-iron railings, and a high coped boundary wall along Findhorn Place that includes a pedestrian gateway.
