Description

This building is a hotel located at 18 Minto Street in Edinburgh, dating from the early 19th century with some modern additions. It consists of a pair of symmetrical classical houses that are two stories high. The northern part features four bays (Nos 16 and 17), while the southern part has three bays (No 18). A modern two-bay linking block connects them and houses the hotel reception.

The exterior is made of cream sandstone ashlar, with rustication at the ground level and coursed rubble on the sides and rear. Architectural details include a base course, a dividing band course, a cill course for the first-floor windows, architraves for the first-floor windows of No 18, a cornice, and a blocking course that is raised at the center and at the terminal dies of No 18.

On the west elevation, No 18 features engaged Doric columns flanking a recessed, segmental arched central doorway with a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight above. There is a single window above this doorway on the first floor. The outer bays have single windows set in segmental arched panels on the ground floor and single windows above on the first floor. Nos 16 and 17 also have engaged Doric columns with recessed, segmental arched doorways in the central bays, modern doors, and blocked fanlights. The outer bays mirror the window arrangement of No 18. The linking block has a glazed two-leaf doorway on the outer right and a single window above, as well as another window on the outer left.

The south elevation includes a doorway on the outer right and a single window above it, along with another window on the outer left. The windows are made of plate glass and timber sash and case. The roofs are covered with grey slate, with a piended design for the main structure and a flat roof for the linking block, featuring coped wallhead stacks.

The interior was not seen in 1996. The property is enclosed by low coursed and coped boundary walls along the street, with high rubble walls to the north and south, and replacement railings. There is a pedestrian gate adjacent to the northern boundary.
