Description
Edward Calvert, 1871. 4-storey 11-bay tenement block with Scots Baronial details, incorporating earlier fabric; shops (mostly original) at ground floor. Elevation arranged as 3 symmetrical units (bays grouped 3/4/4 from left). Squared and snecked stugged sandstone with ashlar dressings; rubble construction of earlier building to E gable. Chamfered, shoulder-arched openings to ground floor. Tabbed, chamfered, shoulder-arched surrounds to windows. Moulded string course between 2nd and 3rd floors stepping up slope to left. 3rd floor windows breaking eaves with crowstepped dormerheads. Central gables of each block (ie bays 2, 5 and 6, and 9 and 10) corbelled out above 1st floor; carved crests in gableheads; cut-down gablehead stacks.
Some 8-pane and some 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Grey slates; crowstepped skews; ridge stacks with circular cans.
