Description

4 and 4A Ventnor Terrace in Edinburgh are early 20th-century, two-storey houses with a basement and attic, featuring a near-symmetrical design with five bays and baronial details. The exterior is constructed from cream sandstone squared and snecked rubble, accented with red sandstone polished ashlar dressings. Notable architectural features include advanced cills and cornices on the ground floor canted bays, a cill course for the first-floor windows, and a cornice with a blocking course on the canted bays. The eaves are deeply overhanging and dentilled.

On the south entrance elevation, the doorway is located in the second bay from the left, featuring a two-leaf panelled outer door with a broken pediment and carved finials. The central bays on the ground floor have bipartite windows, while the first floor above has single windows. The outer bays have full-height, three-light windows, and there are four corniced box dormers.

The east elevation facing Cobden Road includes a piended porch with segmental arched openings and flanking pilasters. Above the porch, there is a single window on the first floor, along with a corbelled, three-light canted window on the outer right that features a carved wood parapet. A box dormer is situated above this window, and a gablehead stack displays a carved baronial shield.

The windows are predominantly timber sash and case, with plate glass, and the dormers and porch have small panes. The roofs are covered with grey slate and have a swept pitch, with coped wallheads and ridge stacks. The property is bordered by low coped boundary walls along the street. The interior was not seen in 1996.
