Description

This is an early 19th century row of terraced houses, with additions and alterations principally dating from around 1830. The building, set back from the road, comprises two storeys and faces southwest. The front elevation, overlooking Straiton Place, is painted and rendered, with sections of polished ashlar. Architectural details include a base course on parts of the southwest elevation, a shallow base course on the northeast elevation, a cill course, a cornice, and a blocking course on the southwest elevation.

The northeast (Straiton Place) elevation has ten bays. Windows are irregularly placed on the first floor, with the extreme left bay blank. Doors are situated in bays 3, 4, 7, and 9. Fluted Doric columns support corniced porches, which are now glazed at numbers 24 and 26. Plate glass fanlights are located above the panelled doors of numbers 20-22. A single-storey addition has been built to the outer left.

The southwest elevation, partially obscured when assessed in 1994, is asymmetrical in a Georgian style, with varying degrees of projection in each bay group. The central three-bay group features a slightly raised bay with a modern door, plate glass fanlight, flanking Doric columns, and a moulded string course above the lintel. A window with a moulded architrave is situated at the first floor, and a pediment with a block finial tops the eaves. The three-bay group to the immediate left is irregularly arranged with windows on each floor. Its eaves are lower and set back from the central group. The flanking bays also have windows on each floor. To the immediate right, a two-bay group is harled and set back considerably from the centre. A modern single-storey, harled addition is at ground level, with windows grouped to the right on the first floor. The two bays at the outer right project to the line of the central group, featuring a modern window on the left and a modern glazed door on the right at ground level. They are harled with ashlar dressings and a pediment spanning the group with a block finial at the apex. The four-bay group to the outer left has been significantly altered with two-storey extensions to bays 1 and 3, and a door with a rectangular plate glass fanlight in bay 3.

The windows are a mix of 4-pane timber sash and case, plate glass timber sash and case, and various modern metal and plastic windows. The roof is covered in grey slate, with a piended grey slate roof over the central three-bay group, the immediately left group, and the outer left group. A sloping grey slate roof is present on the extension at bay 1 of the outer left group, leading to a flat roof over bay 3. Stacks extend from the roof apex and the southwest elevation, generally rendered with coping, except for the ashlar stack to the left of the central group on the southwest elevation.

The interior was not inspected in 1994.

Boundary walls, with droved ashlar and coping to the northeast (formerly with railings) and later harled with coping to the southwest, define the property.
