Description

The Wilson Memorial Church, located at 127 Moira Terrace, Portobello Road, Edinburgh, was designed by James S Johnston and built in 1933. It is a modern church constructed on traditional lines, incorporating Scandinavian design elements. The building is comprised of a rectangular-planned nave to the rear and a separate church hall to the north. The exterior features red brick dressings and banding, with patterned painted render. A back base course extends to the sill course of the ground floor windows, and a lintel course is present on the ground floor.

The south elevation, facing Moira Terrace and Portobello Road, is dominated by a central square plan tower with a window to each of its three stages. A plaque carved with the words "To the Glory of God by Faith in the Freedom of the Service of Jesus Christ 1933" is positioned below the ground floor window. The tower’s construction includes brick detailing to the cill course of the second stage window, a brick panel above the second stage, brick corner pilasters extending just less than the full height and a brick coping. The north elevation of the tower adjoins the gabled end of the nave, which has skewputts. Lean-to, single-story flanking bays house a porch with a quadripartite window, with brick masonry up to lintel height. Advanced brick porches are present to the penultimate bays, featuring a banded brick and rendered gablehead. Each porch contains a pair of 16-square-panelled doors with original windows above. Blank outer bays are defined by lintel and base courses.

The east (Kekewich Avenue) elevation has six bays. An advanced gabled projection, featuring a bipartite window, is found in the outer left bay. Clerestory windows are present in each bay of the nave, while the lean-to aisle range features a tripartite window in each bay, with the exception of a full-height, flat-roofed engaged stair tower in the bay to the left of centre, which has a two-story strip window within a slightly advanced panel.

The west elevation mirrors the east elevation, but includes a single window in the outer left bay, as well as a tripartite and flanking window to the right of the bay.

The windows are metal framed with small panes and top hoppers; the engaged towers and spire have multi-paned windows. The clerestory windows are modern. The roof is covered with grey slate.

The interior, observed in 1995, is of a fine quality. The barrel-roofed nave has original small-pane lighting. There are reliefs to each jumping block of the roof bands, depicting a burning bush and a dove of peace. The skirting is black with cream ceramic tile. Stained glass windows line each aisle, situated near the chancel, and are dedicated to the memory of Jeanie Syer Wilson (west aisle), and Sergeant John Duncan, Flying Officer AF McKellar and 2nd Officer George MacLeod. Additional stained glass is located at the rear of the nave, flanking the double doors to the vestibule. The chancel features an oak dado. Significant oak furnishings include an altar (with a leather top and chrome rim), a font, a baptismal pew, and a pulpit, all sharing a consistent design.

Brick boundary walls are present, with ashlar moulded coping.
