Description
The William Henry Miller Mausoleum, located at 3C Craigentinny Crescent in Edinburgh, is a tall (almost 50 feet) Neo-classical structure built between 1848 and 1856 by architect David Rhind. It features a rectangular plan and is adorned with low relief sculptures carved by Alfred Gatley. The north elevation depicts the "Overthrow of Pharaoh in the Red Sea," while the south elevation shows "The Song of Moses and Miriam." The mausoleum is constructed of polished ashlar and stands on a raised stage, with a plinth and an acanthus-carved course leading to a smaller stage. Above this is another acanthus-carved course, and the final shallow stage supports a rectangular sarcophagus with a roll-moulded base, an architrave, a swag-carved frieze, and a dentilled cornice. The roof is a ribbed barrel design made of fish-scale carved ashlar, featuring acanthus aneifixae. There are segmental pediments on the east and west sides, with acroteria at the apex. The east pediment is inscribed with "Hoc Monumentum Posvit MDMDCCCLVI" within a wreath-surrounded plaque held by angels. A niche on the east elevation has a carved architrave, and the west elevation mirrors the east.
The boundary wall is made of sandstone rubble, with a squared and snecked upper section topped with ashlar coping. A granite plaque set into the wall to the north commemorates William Henry Miller and his parents, William Miller and Martha Rawson or Miller, detailing their dates of birth and death, as well as the consecration of the site on 13th September 1860 and the addition of the sculptures in 1866.
