Gardeners' Cottages, The Drum, Gilmerton, Edinburgh

The Gardeners' Cottages at The Drum in Gilmerton, Edinburgh, are mid-19th century structures located to the northeast of a walled garden. They consist of a single-storey, piended range with a lower, slightly later addition at the rear of No 145, forming an L-plan. The cottages are built of rubble with ashlar dressings and have render or harl pointing.

The northeast (front) elevation likely started as a single cottage, featuring a central door flanked by two windows. The outer left opening has been converted into a door with a letterbox fanlight above, and there is also a later, smaller window to the outer left.

On the rear, there is a glazed door in the centre, a window to the left, and one opening that has been blocked. The wing to No 145 includes a canted link at the angle, with a window, door, and another window at the rear.

The cottages feature boarded timber doors with decorative cast-iron hinges, and timber sash and case windows with small-pane glazing. The roofs are covered with grey slates and have two coped ashlar ridge stacks with simple cornices and moulded thackstane, with similar detailing on the two stacks of the rear wing.
