Description
Newhaven Station, built around 1878, is a converted single-storey, rectangular-plan timber station with nine bays, running north-south along Craighall Road in Edinburgh. The station features timber boarding on all sides and has overhanging eaves. At the rear, there is a projecting timber balcony with a balustrade supported by single steel columns, positioned over the original rail tracks, with a workshop located below. The front has a steel parapet.
On the west (entrance) elevation, there are timber boarded doors in the outer left and right bays, with small single windows to the right of centre and single windows in the remaining bays. The east (rear) elevation consists of eleven bays, featuring a cat-slide roof over a single-storey projection in the outer left bay and double openings in the outer right bay. There is a mix of single windows and doors in the other bays, along with a boarded timber balustrade on the projecting balcony, supported by double warren steel girders below. The outer left and right bays have single columns resting on a brick base course, while the inner bays have double columns. The original opening for the rail track has been blocked to create a covered workshop beneath the shed.
Both the north and south side elevations are characterized by blank timber boarded panelling. There is a variety of two and four-pane timber sash and case windows on both elevations, and the roof is covered with grey slate in diminishing courses, also featuring overhanging eaves. A stepped brick flue is located on the west elevation in the penultimate bay to the right.
