Description

Dating to approximately 1900, 2 Craighall Bank comprises a group value row of nine asymmetrical houses facing southwest towards Victoria Park. The first house (No. 1) has a triangular plan, while the remaining houses are rectangular, with projecting extensions to the rear.

The houses are constructed of polished, yellow sandstone, with some areas of tooling, and polished dressings. The window surrounds are raised and shouldered, with chamfered windows. The rear is of squared and snecked rubble sandstone with stugged dressings and long and short quoins. Features include a continuous base course, overhanging porches, slatted, curvilinear timber brackets, overhanging eaves, and cat-slide roofs. The doorways are tripartite with glazed and panelled timber doors; decorative glazing is incorporated within the sidelights, and timber transoms are present.

The southwest (entrance) elevation shows that No. 1 is advanced to the right with a gable facing southwest. It features an original glazed and panelled timber door in a central recess, with an overhanging porch supported by timber brackets. Bipartite windows are present on both floors in the bay to the outer left, while a tripartite window is found on both floors in the advanced gabled bay to the right, with a blind opening in the gablehead. No. 2 has a glazed and panelled timber door in the bay to the right, again with an overhanging porch and a single window above. A 3-light window is present in a canted bay to the left, with a tripartite window above. No. 3 features a glazed and panelled timber door in the bay to the left with an overhanging porch and a single window above. A tripartite ground-floor window is found in the bay to the right, paired with a bipartite window above. No. 4 has a glazed and panelled timber door in the bay to the right, an overhanging eaves line, a glazed porch, and a single window above. A 2-storey, 3-light canted window is placed in the bay to the left.

The northeast (rear) elevation presents uniform, single-storey extensions to each house, with single windows to both floors between the additions.

Replacement 2-pane sash and case windows have been introduced at No. 2, while original 2-pane timber sash and case windows remain at Nos 1, 3, and 4. At the rear, 4-pane timber sash and case windows are found at Nos 1-4, along with various replacement windows in the extensions. The roof is covered in grey slate with raised stone skews. Polished sandstone ridge stacks are situated to the right and left of centre, adorned with projecting cornices and circular cans. The front is enclosed by a low sandstone boundary wall with polished coping, and various modern iron railings.
