Old Craig House, Craighouse Road, Edinburgh

Old Craig House, located on Craighouse Road in Edinburgh, is a historic building originally dated to 1565. It is a three-storey structure with an attic, built from rubble, measuring 72 feet by 25 feet 8 inches. The house features a square tower near the west end of the north front, with main gables that have an 18th-century club skew, while the tower retains its original crowsteps. The ground floor is vaulted.

An additional northwest wing, dated 1746, was added to the re-entrant angle of the tower, forming an L-plan. This wing is three storeys high with four windows facing east, and it has two crowstepped chimney gables along with a large crowstepped gable to the west. The exterior is harled with margins.

The building underwent minor alterations during an early 19th-century restoration, followed by more extensive changes in the late 19th century by Sydney Mitchell for hospital purposes, with further alterations made since then. A poor modern wooden verandah now encloses the original doorways. The original gatepiers are incorporated into the garden wall.
