Description
St Bernard's Bridge, located at India Place in Edinburgh, was likely designed by James Milne in 1824, with later stairs added in 1887. The bridge features a segmental arch with a smaller land arch to the south and large Jacobean-style stairs on the same side. It is constructed from coursed squared sandstone rubble, with some sandstone ashlar used for the stairs. The bridge has a banded base course and ashlar pilasters on the bridge piers, with alternating raised voussoirs. The eaves are corniced and dentilled, topped with a narrow blocking course. The roadway is bordered by cast-iron railings forming a parapet.
The stairs consist of a double staircase positioned on the east and west sides at the south end of the bridge. They have a banded base course and corniced sandstone ashlar parapets and piers, which are adorned with large sandstone pyramid finials. On the north side of the west staircase, there is a small round arch flanked by a curved stair, and a pedimented carved panel is located at the center.
