Description

1 Danube Street in Stockbridge, Edinburgh, is an extensive terrace of two-storey and basement townhouses built in 1824 by James Milne, showcasing a plain classical style. The terrace features slightly advanced three-storey and basement, five-bay corner tenement pavilions. The first floor has cast-iron balconies and a balustraded parapet above the two-storey center, all set on ground that slopes to the northeast. The exterior is constructed from sandstone ashlar, with a channelled finish at the ground floor and rusticated detailing on the southwest (Danube Street) and northeast (Carlton Street) elevations. The entrance platts extend over the basement area recess at the street level.

Architectural details include a banded base course, a deep banded cill course at the first floor, and corniced eaves courses at both the second floor and the corner pavilions. The doorways are inset, featuring timber doors and rectangular fanlights, some of which have a geometric glazing pattern. The ground floor windows have plain recessed surrounds, while the first floor windows are moulded and corniced, with reeded aprons at the corner pavilions.

The rear elevation is made of coursed squared rubble with tooled ashlar rybats, lintels, and cills, exhibiting roughly regular fenestration. The windows predominantly feature a 12-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case style, with a 6-over-9-pane glazing arrangement at the first floor of the recessed section. The building has a double-pitched roof covered in grey slates, with corniced ashlar wallhead stacks at the corner pavilions that include large fielded panels, as well as corniced ashlar ridge stacks and some clay cans. The cast-iron rainwater goods and railings edge the basement area recess to the street, incorporating a lamp standard with a large bowl shade.

Inside, the interiors feature a classical decorative scheme highlighted by intricate plasterwork in the principal rooms. The stone stairs are complemented by a well-detailed cast iron balustrade and timber handrail, topped by large cupolas. Working window shutters are present, although some later alterations have converted parts of the building into flats.
