Description

1, 3, 5, and 7 Spittal Street in Edinburgh is a building dating from around 1850. It is a four-storey classical structure with a bowed design and an acute-angled corner. The fourth storey serves as a wallhead attic. The building features two bays facing Bread Street and four bays along Spittal Street, with a five-bay recessed quadrant block in between. The ground floor accommodates shops and a public house, although there is a modern shop front at Bread Street.

The exterior is made of droved ashlar stone, with a base course and a broad cornice above the second floor, as well as an eaves cornice. The building has a regular arrangement of windows, with projecting cills on the first and second floors and recessed aprons on the first floor. At No 5 Spittal Street, there is a timber panelled door with a small-pane glazed fanlight leading to the flats. Additionally, the original carved street sign for Spittal Street remains intact.

The windows are timber sash and case with 12-pane glazing, and there are corniced rendered stacks with circular cans on the roof.
