Description
7, 9, 11, 13 Bread Street in Edinburgh is a set of five terraced blocks of four-storey, five-bay tenements designed by William Burn around 1820. The buildings feature a central arched pend leading to Grindlay Street Court, with a cobbled surface. They are constructed of coursed rubble with droved ashlar dressings, although the first two blocks from the left have been cleaned.
The central bays have arched doorways leading to the flats, while the ground floor has altered shop fronts. The outer bays are regularly arranged with windows on the first, second, and third floors, which have projecting cills. There is a cill course at the second floor, an eaves cornice, and long and short quoins on each block.
The windows are primarily plate glass set in timber sash and case frames. The roofs are covered with grey slates, and there are corniced stacks at the ridge, mostly rendered in cement, with circular cans.
