Description

30 Howe Street is a terraced tenement building located in Edinburgh, designed by Robert Morrison in 1807 and completed in 1819. It is a three-storey structure with a basement and features a three-bay front made of broached ashlar sandstone. The building has a cill course at the first floor and advanced cills at the second floor windows, along with a cornice and blocking course at the second floor. There are steps leading up to the entrance platt.

The principal elevation showcases a three-bay front with a cornice supported by consoles. On the right side (No 30), there is a six-panel door with a plate glass rectangular fanlight above it. To the left, there is a two-bay shop front that includes a two-leaf timber door with a plate glass rectangular fanlight at the outer left and a plate glass window in the center. The upper floors feature regular fenestration, with architraved and corniced windows at the first floor.

The north elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (Nos 32-38 Howe Street), as does the south elevation (No 24 Howe Street). The building predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, and there is a polygonal piended dormer on the left side. The roof is covered with grey slate in an M shape, and it has cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. Additionally, there are cast-iron railings with decorative balusters and finials flanking the steps to No 30 and to the outer left of the entrance platt at No 28.
