Description

32, 34, 36, 38 Howe Street is a terraced tenement building designed by Robert Morrison in 1807. It stands four storeys high with a basement and features a five-bay facade made of broached ashlar sandstone. The building has a cill course at the first and second floors, a band course between the second and third floors, and a cornice with a blocking course at the second floor. There are entrance platts and steps, with an oversailing basement on the left side.

The principal elevation showcases an eight-bay pilastered shop front on the main floor. This includes a two-bay shop front at the center, a glazed door with a rectangular fanlight to the right, and a multi-pane window to the left. The outer sections feature a three-bay shop front with a glazed door and rectangular fanlight, flanked by multi-pane windows. There is a nine-panel common stair door in the third bay from the outer left, accompanied by a shallow rectangular fanlight. The outer left section has a two-bay shop front with a five-panel door to the right, a plate glass fanlight, and a plate glass window to the left. A flagged basement area is located to the left.

The northern elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (1-25 Royal Circus), as does the southern elevation (Nos 28 and 30 Howe Street). The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Brick ridge stacks are coped with circular cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1997. The building is topped with copes that are surmounted by cast-iron railings featuring fleur-de-lis balusters and pineapple finials.
