Description

26 Howe Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey and basement, three-bay symmetrical terraced tenement designed by Robert Morrison in 1807. The building is constructed of broached ashlar sandstone and features a cill course for the first-floor windows, an open pediment that spans the bays at the second floor, and a cornice with a blocking course at the third floor. There are steps leading up to the entrance platt.

The east elevation, which is the principal side, has a later three-bay shop front on the principal floor. This includes a two-leaf timber common stair door with a plate glass fanlight to the outer right, a recessed glazed door with a plate glass rectangular fanlight in the centre bay, and a plate glass window to the left. The cornice above this shop front is supported by consoles. The upper floors have regular fenestration, featuring an architraved and consoled window that is centred on the first floor and architraved windows on the third floor.

The north elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (Nos 28 and 30 Howe Street), as does the south elevation (No 24 Howe Street). The building predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, cast-iron rainwater goods, and brick gablehead stacks topped with circular cans. The interiors were not seen during the last inspection in 1997.
