Description

24 Howe Street is a terraced tenement building in Edinburgh, designed by Robert Morrison in 1807. It is three stories high, with an attic and basement, and features a symmetrical three-bay layout. The exterior is constructed of broached ashlar sandstone, with a cill course beneath the first-floor windows. The entrance includes steps and a platform that extends over the basement.

The principal elevation has a later three-bay pilastered shop front at ground level. This shop front includes a modern multi-pane window in the center, flanked by a pair of six-panel, two-leaf timber doors. To the left is a blind rectangular fanlight, and to the right is a plate glass rectangular fanlight. The upper floors have regular window arrangements, with an architraved window featuring a cornice at the first floor, and a pair of tripartite windows spaced evenly in the modern attic.

The north and south elevations are part of adjoining terraces, which are listed separately (18-22 and 26 Howe Street). The building predominantly features twelve-pane timber sash and case windows and has a shallow grey slate M-shaped roof.

The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The property also includes cast-iron railings with decorative balusters flanking the south side of the north entrance platform and steps.

At the rear of the property is a single-storey and attic mews building, which has a three-bay layout and a principal elevation facing Jamaica Street. This mews is constructed of coursed rubble with droved ashlar dressings. It features a centered two-leaf modern timber door at ground level with a stone lintel, another two-leaf timber door to the right at ground level with a stone lintel, and regular fenestration on the first floor. The roof is pantiled.
