Description
25, 27, 29 Howe Street is a terraced tenement building designed by Robert Reid and William Sibbald in 1802. It is four stories tall with a basement and features nine bays. The exterior is made of broached ashlar sandstone, with V-jointed rustication at the principal floor. There are various decorative elements including a band course at the principal floor, a band course and cill course at the first floor, a cill course and cornice at the second floor, and a cornice with a blocking course at the third floor. The building has ashlar steps and entrance platts that extend over the basement.
On the west elevation, the principal entrance features a part-glazed common-stair door with a blind rectangular fanlight, located in the fourth bay from the left at the principal floor. There are round-arched doorways in the third bays from both the left and right, containing a four-panel timber door on the left and a six-panel timber door on the right, both with radial, semicircular fanlights above. The remaining bays at the principal floor have windows, and the upper floors display regular fenestration. The basement area is flagged.
The north elevation is adjacent to another terrace, which is listed separately (31-37, odd numbers, Howe Street), as is the south elevation (21-23B, odd numbers, Howe Street).
The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The ridge and gablehead stacks are made of broached ashlar and are topped with circular cans.
The interiors were not seen as of 1997. The property is also noted for its railings, which consist of ashlar copes topped with iron railings that have spear-headed balusters and urn finials.
