Description

31, 33, 35, 37 Howe Street is a terraced tenement building designed by Robert Reid and William Sibbald in 1802. It has four storeys and a basement, featuring a nine-bay façade. The building includes a band course at the principal floor, a band course and cill course at the first floor, a band course and cornice at the second floor, and a cornice with a blocking course at the third floor. The entrance features ashlar steps and platforms that extend over the basement.

On the west elevation, there is a six-panel timber common stair door located in the fourth bay from the right, which has a blind rectangular fanlight above it. The third bays from both the right and left contain round-arched doorways with six-panel timber doors and radial, semicircular fanlights. The remaining bays on the principal floor have windows, while the upper floors and basement display regular fenestration. The basement area is flagged.

The north elevation is obscured by an adjoining terrace, which is detailed in a separate listing for 45-89 Great King Street. Similarly, the south elevation is also obscured by an adjoining terrace, with details provided in a separate listing for 25-29 Howe Street.

The building features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The ridge stacks are broached, with random rubble and rendered gablehead stacks that are coped and topped with circular cans. The skews are also coped.

The interiors were not seen as of 1997. The railings consist of ashlar copes topped with iron railings that have spear-headed balusters and pineapple finials.
