Description
3, 5, 7 Howe Street is a terraced tenement building in Edinburgh, designed by Robert Reid and William Sibbald in 1802. It is four storeys tall with a basement and features seven bays. The exterior is constructed of broached ashlar sandstone, with V-jointed rustication at the principal floor. There are band courses at the principal, first, and second floors, and projecting cills at the windows of the first, second, and third floors. The building has a cornice and a blocking course at the third floor, and the entrance platts and steps extend over the basements.
On the west elevation, there is a round-arched doorpiece at the principal floor, which has a panelled door, a blind, and a radial semicircular fanlight. This doorpiece is flanked by two additional round-arched doorpieces, each with panelled doors and radial semicircular fanlights. The remaining bays at the principal floor and the floors above have regular fenestration. The basement area is flagged.
The north elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (9 and 9A Howe Street), as does the south elevation, which adjoins another terrace (1-19 Heriot Row).
The windows are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case. The roof is a grey slate M-roof, with cast-iron rainwater goods. There are broached ashlar ridge stacks and a random rubble gablehead stack with broached quoins, which is coped and has circular cans.
The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The property also features iron railings.
