Description
11 and 13 Howe Street is a terraced tenement building designed by Robert Reid and William Sibbald in 1802. It is three stories high, with an attic and basement, and features five bays. The exterior is made of polished ashlar sandstone, with V-jointed rustication at the principal floor. There is a band course and cornice at the principal floor, a cornice over four bays on the left at the first floor, and a cill course over the same four bays. The second floor windows have projecting cills, and there is a cornice over the four bays on the left at the second floor, along with a blocking course at that level. The entrance platform and steps extend over the basement.
On the west elevation, there is a round-arched doorpiece at the center of the principal floor, featuring a six-panel timber door and a radial semicircular fanlight. The outer right bay is slightly recessed and includes a nine-panel timber common-stair door with a five-pane rectangular fanlight set in ashlar infill to a former round-arched recess. The remaining bays at the principal floor have windows in round-arched recesses, while the upper floors have regular fenestration, with architraved and corniced windows in the four left bays at the first floor. The basement area is flagged.
The north elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (15 and 17 Howe Street), as does the south elevation (9 and 9A Howe Street). The building predominantly features twelve-pane timber sash and case windows, with window guards on four windows at the left of the first floor. The roof is covered with grey slate and includes a pair of polygonal piended dormers that are regularly spaced. The building has cast-iron rainwater goods, broached ridge stacks that are coped with circular cans, and skews.
The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The railings consist of ashlar copes topped with iron railings, featuring spear-headed balusters and urn finials.
