Description

9 and 9A Howe Street in Edinburgh is a three-storey and basement terraced tenement built in 1802 by architects Robert Reid and William Sibbald. The building is constructed from broached ashlar sandstone and features V-jointed rustication at the principal floor. There are band courses at the principal, first, and second floors, with projecting cills at the first and second floor windows, and a cornice with a blocking course at the second floor. The entrance has a platt and steps that oversail the basement.

The west elevation features a round-arched doorpiece in the left bay at the principal floor, which includes a panelled door flanked by five-pane glazed panels and a radial semicircular fanlight. The remaining bays have regular fenestration at the principal floor and the floor above, with a flagged basement area.

The north elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (11 and 13 Howe Street), as does the south elevation (5-7, odd numbers, Howe Street). The building predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows and a grey slate M-roof, with a polygonal piended dormer on the right and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The railings feature ashlar copes topped with iron railings, which have spear-headed balusters and urn finials.
