Description

15, 17, and 19 Scotland Street in Edinburgh is a terraced tenement building designed by Robert Reid and William Sibbald between 1801 and 1804. It is four storeys tall, with a basement and a wallhead attic on the fourth storey. The exterior is constructed from broached ashlar sandstone, featuring V-jointed rustication on the principal floor. There are band courses between the basement and the principal floor, as well as between the principal floor and the first floor. The building has projecting cills at the first and second floor windows, a cornice at the third floor, and a cornice with a blocking course at the same level. The entrance features ashlar steps and platts that overhang the basement.

On the west (principal) elevation, there are round-arched doorways in three bays at the centre of the principal floor, with a common stair door in the middle. These doorways consist of six-panel timber doors with radial semicircular fanlights, while No 19 has plate glass. The remaining bays on the principal floor contain windows, and the upper floors have regular fenestration. The basement features segmental-arched doorways at Nos 15 and 19.

The north elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (21 and 23 Scotland Street), as does the south elevation (11 and 13 Scotland Street).

The building predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The ridge and gablehead stacks are made of broached ashlar and are coped with circular cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The railings consist of ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings featuring spear-headed balusters and urn finials.
