Description

16 and 18 Scotland Street in Edinburgh are a pair of terraced tenement buildings designed by Robert Reid and William Sibbald between 1801 and 1804. They rise four storeys plus a basement and feature a wallhead attic on the fourth storey. The exterior is constructed of broached ashlar sandstone, with V-jointed rustication on the principal floor. There are band courses between the basement and principal floor, as well as between the principal floor and first floor. The first and second floor windows have projecting cills, and there are cornices at the second and third floors, along with a blocking course at the third floor. The entrance features ashlar steps and platts that overhang the basement.

On the principal elevation, there is a six-panel timber common stair door with a rectilinear rectangular fanlight located in the third bay from the left at the principal floor. In the third bay from the right at the principal floor, there is a six-panel timber door with a plate glass rectangular fanlight. The remaining bays contain windows, with regular fenestration on the floors above and in the basement, which has a flagged area.

The northeast and southeast elevations adjoin other terraces, which are listed separately as 20-24A Scotland Street and 12-14A Scotland Street, respectively.

The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The railings feature ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings that have spear-headed balusters and pineapple finials.
