Description

11 and 13 Scotland Street in Edinburgh is a terraced tenement building designed by Robert Reid and William Sibbald, constructed between 1801 and 1804. This four-storey structure, which includes a basement and a wallhead attic on the fourth storey, is built from broached ashlar sandstone. The principal floor features V-jointed rustication, with band courses separating the basement from the principal floor and the principal floor from the first floor. The building has projecting cills for the first and second floor windows, a cornice at the second floor, and a cornice with a blocking course at the third floor. The entrance features ashlar steps and platts that overhang the basement.

On the west elevation, there is a six-panel timber common stair door with a rectangular fanlight located to the outer right of the principal floor. To the right of the center, there is a round-arched doorpiece with a six-panel timber door and a radial semicircular fanlight. The remaining bays on the principal floor contain windows, with regular fenestration on the floors above and in the basement, which also has a segmental-arched doorpiece.

The north elevation is part of an adjoining terrace, which is listed separately (15-19A Scotland Street). The south elevation features a coursed rubble gable with windows centered on all floors.

The building predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. There is a rendered ridge stack and a part-rendered gablehead stack, both coped and featuring circular cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The property is also adorned with ashlar copes topped by cast-iron railings with spear-headed balusters.
