8 Scotland Street, Edinburgh

8 Scotland Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey and basement terraced tenement building designed by Robert Reid and William Sibbald between 1801 and 1804. The building features a total of 12 bays, with the fourth storey serving as a wallhead attic. It is constructed of broached ashlar sandstone, showcasing V-jointed rustication at the principal floor. There are band courses between the basement and the principal floor, as well as between the principal floor and the first floor. The windows on the first and second floors have projecting cills, and there are cornices at the second and third floors. The entrance includes ashlar steps and platts that oversail the basement.

On the principal elevation, there are four-panel timber doors with rectangular fanlights located in the third and sixth bays from the left, and in the third and fourth bays from the right. The remaining bays at the principal floor contain windows, while the floors above exhibit regular fenestration, with blind windows in the fifth bay from the left on the first, second, and third floors. The basement has regular fenestration as well.

The northeast elevation features a coursed rubble gable that is mostly blank, with a corniced doorpiece flanked by windows to the left of center at the basement and centered windows on the floors above.

The southeast elevation adjoins another terrace, which is detailed in a separate listing for 21-30 Drummond Place.

The building predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. It includes a rendered ridge stack and an ashlar gablehead stack with broached ashlar quoins, both of which are coped and feature circular cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The railings consist of ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings that include some spear-headed balusters and urn finials.
