Description

8, 10, and 10A Dundonald Street in Edinburgh is a terraced tenement building designed by Robert Reid and William Sibbald between 1801 and 1804. It is four storeys tall with a basement and features seven bays. The exterior is made of broached ashlar sandstone, with V-jointed rustication at the principal floor. There is a band course at both the principal and first floors, projecting cills for the first and second floor windows, a cornice at the second floor, and a cornice with a blocking course at the third floor. The entrance features ashlar steps and platts that overhang the basement.

On the west elevation, the principal entrance consists of a pair of round-arched doorways located in the central bay and the penultimate bay from the right, each with four-panel timber doors and radial, semicircular fanlights. The remaining bays on the principal floor and the floors above contain windows. The basement area is flagged.

The north elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (12-22 Dundonald Street), while the south elevation also adjoins a terrace that is listed separately (21-30 Drummond Place).

The interior was not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The brick stacks at the ridge and gablehead are coped and have circular cans.

The railings and lamp consist of ashlar copes topped with iron railings that have spear-headed balusters and some pineapple finials. There are cast-iron lamps mounted on the railings with glass globes positioned at the outer left and right.
