Description
12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 Dundonald Street is a terraced tenement building in Edinburgh, designed by Robert Reid and William Sibbald between 1801 and 1804. It stands four storeys high with a basement and features a near-symmetrical façade with ten bays. The exterior is constructed from broached sandstone ashlar, showcasing channelled V-jointed rustication on the principal floor. There are band courses at the principal and first floors, projecting cills on the first and second floor windows, and cornices at the second and third floors. The entrance is accessed via ashlar steps and platts that overhang the basement.
On the west elevation, the main entrance doors are located in the bay to the right of the centre and in the third bays from both the left and right at the principal floor. These doors are six-panel timber with plate glass and decorative rectangular fanlights. The remaining bays at the principal floor contain windows, while the upper floors and basement have regular fenestration, including a small two-pane window in the fourth bay from the left at the basement level. The basement area is flagged.
The north elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (1-13A Royal Crescent), and the south elevation also adjoins a terrace listed separately (8-10A Dundonald Street).
The interior was not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The building predominantly features twelve-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is a grey slate M-roof, with cast-iron rainwater goods. There is a broached ashlar ridge stack and a rendered gablehead stack, both coped and with circular cans.
The railings and lamps consist of ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings that have spear-headed balusters and some pineapple finials. There are cast-iron lamps mounted on the railings with glass globes at the outer left and right.
