Description

5 and 7 Scotland Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey terrace tenement built between 1801 and 1804 by architects Robert Reid and William Sibbald. The building features a double basement and is constructed from broached ashlar sandstone, with V-jointed rustication on the principal floor. The fourth storey serves as a wallhead attic. There are band courses between the basement and the principal floor, as well as between the principal floor and the first floor. The first-floor windows have projecting cills, and there are cornices at the second and third floors, with a blocking course at the third floor. Ashlar steps and entrance platts extend over the basement.

The west elevation, which is the principal facade, has a round-arched doorpiece at the principal floor. This includes a six-panel timber door leading to the common stair, topped with a radial semicircular fanlight. There are also round-arched doorpieces with six-panel timber doors and radial semicircular fanlights in the bays third from the left and right. The remaining bays on the principal floor contain windows, while the floors above and the basement have regular fenestration. A segmental-arched doorpiece leads to the basement of No 9A.

The north elevation features a coursed rubble gable with windows positioned to the left of centre on all floors above the basement. The south elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (31-36A Drummond Place).

The building has 12-pane timber sash and case windows and a grey slate M-roof. It is adorned with cast-iron railings, and the ridge and gablehead stacks are rendered and coped, topped with circular cans. Although the interiors were not seen in 1997, there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The railings consist of ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings featuring balusters and finials.
