Description
29 and 31 Scotland Street in Edinburgh is a terraced tenement building designed by Robert Reid and William Sibbald, constructed between 1801 and 1804. This four-storey and basement structure features a wallhead attic and is built from broached ashlar sandstone. The principal floor is distinguished by V-jointed rustication, with band courses separating the basement from the principal floor and the principal floor from the first floor. The building has projecting cills at the first and second floor windows, a cornice at the second floor, and both a cornice and blocking course at the third floor. The entrance includes ashlar steps and platforms that extend over the basement.
The western elevation, which is the principal façade, showcases a central four-panel timber door with a rectangular fanlight made of plate glass. To the outer left, there is another four-panel timber door with a rectilinear rectangular fanlight. The remaining bays on the principal floor contain windows, and the upper floors display regular fenestration, including segmental-arched openings at the basement level.
The northern and southern elevations are part of adjoining terraces, which are listed separately as 33-37 Scotland Street and 25-27A Scotland Street, respectively. The building features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The gablehead stack is made of rubble and has broached ashlar quoins, topped with copes and circular cans.
Although the interiors were not seen in 1997, there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The property is also adorned with ashlar copes topped by cast-iron railings featuring spear-headed balusters and urn finials.
