39, 41 Scotland Street, Edinburgh

43 Scotland Street is a five-storey, four-bay terraced tenement building, designed by William Hogg in 1883, located on a corner site in Edinburgh. The exterior is constructed of broached ashlar sandstone, featuring V-jointed rustication at the ground level on the principal elevation, with polished ashlar at the ground level of the northern elevation. The building has a base course, a band course between the ground and first floors, and projecting cills for the first and second floor windows. There is another band course between the second and third floors, a cornice at the third floor, and a cornice with a blocking course at the fourth floor.

On the western (principal) elevation, there is a six-panel timber door with a plate glass rectangular fanlight located to the right of center at the ground level. The remaining bays at the ground level and the floors above feature regular fenestration.

The northern elevation, which includes Nos. 41 and 43, has a six-bay layout. It features two six-panel timber doors with plate glass rectangular fanlights, one located in the penultimate bay from the left at ground level, and another between the penultimate bay from the right and the third bay from the right at ground level. The remaining bays and floors above have regular fenestration, with blind windows in the penultimate bay from the right on all floors.

The southern elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (33-37 Scotland Street). The building predominantly has four-pane timber sash and case windows, grey slate roofs, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The wallhead and ridge stacks are rendered and coped, with circular cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The railings consist of ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings featuring spear-headed balusters.
