Description
19, 21, 23 Nelson Street in Edinburgh is a terraced tenement building designed by Robert Reid and William Sibbald in 1812. It is four storeys high with a basement and features seven bays. The exterior is constructed from broached ashlar sandstone, with V-jointed rustication at the basement. There is a band course at the principal and first floors, projecting cills for the windows on the first and second floors, a continual cornice at the second floor, and a cornice with a blocking course at the third floor. The entrance features ashlar steps and platts that extend over the basement.
On the west (principal) elevation, there is a six-panel timber common stair door with a blind rectangular fanlight, located centrally on the principal floor. This door is flanked by a pair of six-panel timber doors with radial rectangular fanlights. The remaining bays on the principal floor contain windows, and there is regular fenestration on the floors above and in the basement, which has a flagged area.
The south elevation is made of random rubble, with windows centered on all floors and additional windows to the right of center on the principal, first, and second floors. The east (rear) elevation is also random rubble, featuring regular fenestration across all floors.
The building predominantly has twelve-pane timber sash and case windows, with anthemion and palmette window guards on three bays at the right on the second floor. The roof is covered with grey slate in an M shape, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods. The building features a rendered ridge stack, a rendered gablehead stack, and a random rubble gablehead stack with broached ashlar quoins, all coped and with circular cans.
The interiors were not seen as of 1997. The property is also adorned with ashlar copes topped by iron railings that have spear-headed balusters and urn finials.
