Description

15, 17, and 17A Nelson Street in Edinburgh is a terraced tenement building designed by Robert Reid and William Sibbald in 1812. It is four storeys high with a basement and features five bays. The exterior is made of broached ashlar sandstone, with V-jointed rustication at the principal floor. There is a band course at both the principal and first floors, a continual cill course at the first floor, projecting cills for the second floor windows, and a continual cornice at the second floor that returns and terminates at the corners. The third floor has a cornice and blocking course. The entrance features ashlar steps and platts that overhang the basement.

On the west (principal) elevation, there are round-arched doorways in the central bay and the penultimate bay from the right at the principal floor, which contain six-panel timber doors with radial semicircular fanlights. The remaining bays on the principal floor have windows, and the floors above show regular fenestration. The basement area is flagged.

The north elevation is also four storeys high with a basement and features five bays, becoming 6-7A Northumberland Place. It has regular fenestration across all floors, with blind windows in the penultimate bay from the right and the outer right bay at the principal, first, second, and third floors. The basement has six bays, with panelled timber doors in the penultimate bays on the left and right, flanked by windows. This area is also flagged.

Most windows are 12-pane timber sash and case. There are window guards on all third-floor windows in the west elevation, except for the penultimate bay from the right, and on three bays to the left at the third floor of the north elevation. The roof is covered with grey slate in an M shape. The building has cast-iron rainwater goods and features a broached ashlar shouldered gablehead stack centered on the west elevation, along with a rendered shouldered gablehead stack centered on the north elevation, both coped and fitted with circular cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The property is adorned with ashlar copes topped with iron railings featuring spear-headed balusters and pineapple finials. There are also cast-iron lamps mounted on the railings with glass globes.
