Description

9, 11, and 13 Nelson Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey and basement terraced tenement built in 1812 by architects Robert Reid and William Sibbald. The building features a seven-bay façade constructed from broached ashlar sandstone, with V-jointed rustication at the principal floor. Notable architectural details include a band course at the principal and first floors, a continual cill course to four bays on the left at the first floor, projecting cills for the second-floor windows, a continual cornice at the second floor, and a cornice with a blocking course at the third floor. The entrance is accessed via ashlar steps and entrance platts that oversail the basement.

On the west (principal) elevation, there is a nine-panel timber common stair door with a plate glass rectangular fanlight, centrally located at the principal floor and flanked by a pair of round-arched doorpieces. To the left, there is a glazed door with a blind semicircular fanlight, and to the right, a glazed door with a plate glass semicircular fanlight and a bracketed canopy. The remaining bays at the principal floor contain windows, while the floor above features regular fenestration, with cills lowered in three bays to the right at the first floor. The penultimate bays from the left and right at the third floor contain blind windows. The basement area is flagged.

The north elevation adjoins another terrace, which is listed separately (15, 17, and 17A Nelson Street), as does the south elevation (5 and 7 Nelson Street). The building predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows. A balcony spans three bays to the right at the first floor, and window guards are present in three bays to the right at the second floor and on all third-floor windows, except for the penultimate bay from the left. The roof is a grey slate M-roof, with cast-iron rainwater goods, broached ridge stacks, and a rendered gablehead stack that is coped and features circular cans.

The interiors were not seen as of 1997. The property is adorned with ashlar copes topped by iron railings with spear-headed balusters and pineapple finials. Additionally, there is a cast-iron railing-mounted lamp with a glass globe.
