Description

3, 4, 5 Northumberland Place in Edinburgh is a terraced tenement building designed by Robert Reid and William Sibbald in 1804. It has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, featuring an 11-bay façade. The exterior is constructed of broached ashlar sandstone, with V-jointed rustication on the principal floor and random rubble on the outer left bay. There is a band course at the principal and first floors, advanced cills on the first and second floor windows, and raised margins around the openings in the outer left bay. The entrance steps and platforms are made of ashlar and extend over the basements.

On the north (principal) elevation, there is a six-panel timber door with a multi-pane rectangular fanlight located in the fourth bay from the right, and another six-panel timber door with vertically boarded timber infill below a plate glass rectangular fanlight in the outer left bay at the principal floor. The remaining bays feature windows at the principal floor, with regular fenestration on the upper floors. The basement of No 2 has blind windows, with only the upper parts visible. There are mirrored pairs of three-bay basement entrances that include enlarged multi-pane windows on the outer left and right, six-panel timber doors with shallow multi-pane rectangular fanlights, and regular fenestration in the other basement bays. The basement area is flagged.

The east elevation is part of an adjoining terrace, which is listed separately as 1 Northumberland Place, while the west elevation is also part of an adjoining terrace, listed separately as 15 and 17 Nelson Street.

The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. There are rendered and random rubble ridge stacks, some with broached ashlar quoins, all coped and fitted with circular cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The property is also adorned with ashlar copes topped by iron railings featuring spear-headed balusters and pineapple finials, along with cast-iron lamps mounted on the railings, complete with glass globes.
