Description

25, 27, and 29 Nelson Street in Edinburgh is a terraced tenement building designed by Robert Reid and William Sibbald in 1812. This four-storey structure features a basement and has seven bays. It is constructed from broached ashlar sandstone, with V-jointed rustication at the principal floor. Notable architectural details include a band course at the principal and first floors, projecting cills at the first and second floor windows, a continual cornice at the second floor, and a cornice with a blocking course at the third floor. The entrance is accessed via ashlar steps and entrance platts that overhang the basement.

On the western elevation, there is a six-panel timber common stair door with a blind rectangular fanlight, centered at the principal floor. Additionally, there is a six-panel timber door with a radial rectangular fanlight located in the third bay from the right. The windows on the principal floor are regular in arrangement, with modern plate glass windows flanking the six-panel timber door and a shallow plate glass rectangular fanlight to the left. The basement area is flagged.

The northern and southern elevations adjoin other terraces, which are listed separately. The building predominantly features twelve-pane timber sash and case windows and has a grey slate M-roof. It includes cast-iron rainwater goods, rendered ridge stacks, and a broached ashlar gablehead stack that is coped and has circular cans. The skews are also coped.

While the interiors were not seen in 1997, there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The property is enhanced by ashlar copes topped with iron railings that have spear-headed balusters and urn finials. There are also cast-iron lamps mounted on the railings, featuring glass globes.
